Personally, I love writing shitty first drafts. I feel like it’s what gives my writing its voice, and what allows me to be myself in my writing. When I write, I like to just sort of mumble what I’m writing to myself. It allows me to sound like I real person when I’m writing. I guess I just do it to make sure that it sounds like something I would actually say. Then, I have most of my ideas down and in a way that’s genuine, and usually, because I have a habit of speaking while I write, it flows naturally, as though I were actually speaking the words I wrote. Then, I go back and write out a specific structure for how I want the paper to go. It’ll usually just be a simple outline, starting with the largest topics, and moving inward to more detailed points that I know I want to make. I don’t get too specific though, so I have some room to play with exactly how I want to convey the message. The outline for me then is like a coloring book, or a map, where I go back and follow the vague rules I’ve set for myself in order to convey what I want to say in a meaningful way, while maintaining a more identifiable voice.
